We operate a Clothes Closet and Food Pantry on the campus of St Hugo of the Hill parish, and fill thousands of orders for clothing, food and household goods presented to us by social workers who make home visits.
Charlene Krupitzer is director of the LOC Clothes Closet Food Pantry, based in a warehouse at St. Hugo of the Hills Parish in Bloomfield Hills. “We typically provide clothing or food for about 16,000 clients in a normal year. We are growing, and need new people,” Krupitzer said. “The number of orders is increasing in spite of the economy being better. A lot of people who call for food are folks who have housing and are getting by until an illness, car accident or something else occurs. Then the money they would have had for food has to pay for medical bills. There is still a great need, and this is just the Oakland County area.
Singlehandedly, the Ladies of Charity’s food pantry processes more than 7,000 orders in a normal year. Food is purchased through Gleaners and US Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Food Assistance Program TEFAP. The Ladies of Charity has kept the Food Pantry operational during this crisis. We continue to collect and provide emergency food by way our dedicated but limited staff working on scattered shifts. Additionally, at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, ham and turkey dinners are donated to an ever-increasing number of needy families.

Christmas Baskets for those in need are a joyous tradition for the Ladies of Charity dating back 50 years. LOC’s support is more important than ever to make sure our Oakland County community preserves the giving spirit of Christmas. Most recently, a Harvest of Books Happy Hour preceded the Christmas Baskets project. The Happy Hour was a successful addition to the festive activities. The Christmas Basket project scope is a year round endeavor culminating in a hectic December week of activity with close to a hundred volunteers. We are always looking for willing hands to help us with this large scale project helping over 150 families in 2019 with holiday food, staples, toys, children’s clothing, household cleaning and laundry supplies.
Ladies of Charity funds the purchase of hundreds of rosaries, bibles and First Communion books for several parishes in Detroit and Pontiac.
Normally, our volunteers gather together to carefully wrap all the generously donated religious First Communion gifts for the deserving kids of Detroit and Pontiac.
Through our efforts, we are helping young children as they begin their journey within the Catholic faith. We pray for the students and their families.
